How to build a timber or composite deck

The typical timber deck starts with strategically positioned posts for support. To ensure the posts are appropriately treated and fastened, we prefer to use in-ground posts over those placed in shoes or stirrups. We attach bearers – the largest timber within the deck – to the top of the posts and run parallel along the deck for stability and support. We then place joists across the bearers, resting on top of them, with decking boards and fix ddecking boards in the timber of your choice on top of the joists, running in the same direction as the bearers.

Whilst this basic structure forms the foundation of almost any deck, our expert team can create complex and unique decking designs with multiple levels, unconventional shapes, for sloping sites – even suspended from the side of a building!

For Softwoods decks, we prefer to use treated pine for the substructure – ideally H3 kiln-dried treated pine – which offers minimal movement, resists rot and insect attacks, and is budget friendly.

For durability, we encase posts in concrete or use hot-dipped galvanised steel post shoes or stirrups with galvanised bolts to prevent rusting. Our carpenters bolt bearers to posts and joists and secure them using trip-l-grip or uni-tie brackets and galvanised nails.

Softwoods Composite Decking – an innovative, popular and low-maintenance alternative to timber, composite decking is a synthetic decking material manufactured using wood chips and recycled plastics for a contemporary look. Want the easy-care benefits of composite decking with the look and feel of traditional timber? We stock brands such as Evalast, Trex and Modwood whose products do a great job of replicating a timber finish.

The benefits of Composite Decking

Weather resistant – designed to withstand inclement weather, rain and sunlight

Durable – composites do not degrade or break down over time and our premium composite products are protected by a capped polyurethane coat to protect against stains, scratches and fading

Low maintenance – don’t require staining, sealing or ongoing maintenance, just wash and go!

Lightweight – easy to handle, store and transport which can translate to faster build times and cost savings

Suitable for low-lying decks
