Our Process

From initial design through to final construction, Softwoods offers an end-to-end pergola building service custom-designed with your unique property and lifestyle in mind. So you don’t have to lift a finger…until it’s time to pour the wine.

Not sure where to start? Our expert team can advise on the best style, size and materials to suit your site, let in the light, work with your budget and improve your lifestyle.

Once you’re happy with our design, we’ll use our innovative software to create and submit detailed council plans for your pergola, and our in-house certifier will manage the approval process for you.

After we get the green light, we’ll work with you to choose your preferred pergola timber, hardware and roofing products. Then we’ll paint the timber with two coats of your chosen colour and deliver it all to your door.

Different Pergola Styles

The two most sought-after pergola styles are the gable roof pergola, and the flat/skillion roof pergola – some people even combine the two.

Gable roof pergola

Gable roof pergolas feature a higher roof with open ends to invite airflow and natural light, and rafters cut at angles to meet in the centre of the structure. They can be designed to mirror your home’s roofline and blend in with its architectural style, with a choice of hip or bay ends to personalise the design.

To create the ambience of a true outdoor living room, gable roof pergolas can feature a lined ceiling . Decorative features include false gables or Dutch gables which create additional space under the roof and a unique roofline appearance from the outside.

Flat/skillion roof pergola

Flat/skillion roof pergolas are popular and highly versatile, with the option to build with different levels or pitches to suit your specific property. These can be lined, and you can also incorporate lighting, heating, speakers or ceiling fans.

Softwoods recommends a minimum five-degree pitch on flat roofs using standard roof sheeting for optimal water drainage. Lower pitches are possible with heavy-duty, high-profile roof sheeting, but we suggest discussing this with a Softwoods expert before ordering to ensure you choose a design that will complement and add value to your home.
